Our Teenage Dog Survival course in Hook, near Basingstoke and Hartley Wintney, is designed for juvenile and adolescent dogs who are ready to take their training to the next level.

Teenage dogs can be challenging. Their confidence, independence, curiosity and excitement can all increase as they mature, and behaviours that seemed well established during puppyhood can suddenly become much harder.

This course helps you and your dog navigate those changes while continuing to build a strong, positive relationship.

What is Teenage Dog Survival?

Teenage Dog Survival is our intermediate dog training course, designed as a follow-on from puppy school.

Rather than simply repeating puppy exercises, we build on the foundations you have already established and introduce new challenges that reflect the real-life situations you and your adolescent dog are likely to experience.

Our sessions use force-free, reward-based training methods, helping your dog learn what we want them to do while keeping training enjoyable and motivating.

The aim isn't to have a perfectly behaved dog. It's to give you the skills and understanding you need to help your teenage dog make good choices, even when the world around them is exciting.

What will we work on?

Throughout the course, we will work on practical skills that are particularly important during adolescence.

🐾 Recall

Teenage dogs can suddenly become much more interested in the environment around them!

We'll work on developing a reliable recall and teaching your dog that coming back to you is always worthwhile.

You'll learn how to build recall gradually, use rewards effectively and practise around distractions.

🦮 Lead Walking

Loose-lead walking can become much harder when your puppy reaches adolescence.

We'll help you develop better lead-walking skills without relying on force or harsh corrections.

You'll learn how to encourage your dog to stay connected with you and make walking together more enjoyable.

🎯 Engagement & Focus

A teenage dog's attention can sometimes seem to disappear the moment something more interesting comes along!

We'll introduce fun engagement games designed to build your dog's focus, connection and willingness to work with you.

These games can also become useful tools for everyday life, particularly when you need your dog to pay attention around distractions.

🐕 Good Manners

Adolescence is an important time for reinforcing polite behaviour.

We'll practise skills such as settling, appropriate greetings, waiting, responding to cues and making good choices around people and other dogs.

The goal is to help your dog become a polite and enjoyable companion both at home and out and about.

🧠 Training Around Distractions

Dogs don't learn in a vacuum. But they do struggle with IMPULSE CONTROL.

As your dog develops, we'll gradually introduce distractions and challenges so you can practice applying their training in more realistic situations.

This helps bridge the gap between “my dog can do it in class” and “my dog can actually do it in everyday life.”

Why do teenage dogs need different training?

Adolescence can be a challenging period for both dogs and their owners.

Your dog may suddenly:

• Ignore cues they previously knew

• Become more easily distracted

• Pull more strongly on the lead

• Struggle to come back when called

• Become more interested in other dogs, people or smells

• Find it harder to settle

• Test boundaries and become more independent

• Appear to have forgotten their puppy training!

This doesn't necessarily mean that your training has failed.

Teenage Dog Survival is suitable for juvenile and adolescent dogs, particularly dogs that have completed puppy training and are ready for the next stage.
